Reg Smythe b.1917

www.afnews.info segnala: Reg Smythe (10 July 1917 – 13 June 1998, UK) was a newspaper cartoonist. He is best known for his feature ‘Andy Capp’.

Smythe joined the military at an early age. He was stationed in Egypt and began drawing theatre posters and selling cartoons to local papers. He served through World War II.

He became a freelance cartoonist after the war, placing his work in “Speedway World”, the “Evening Standard”, “Punch”, and other magazines and newspapers.

From 1954, he was a regular cartoonist at the “Daily Mirror” and in 1957 he was asked to create a feature for the Manchester edition. The result was ‘Andy Capp’, which quickly expanded to national publication.

As Don Markstein put it, “Andy Capp is lazy, belligerent, unskilled at any socially acceptable occupation, and usually drunk. Yet, he’s one of the greatest successes in the history of British comics….” Smythe created the strip until a year after his death — he had stockpiled that many episodes.

‘Andy Capp’ reached the USA by 1963 and has been published in 34 countries in 13 languages. In 1960, Fleetway published a brief comic book series called “Buster” featuring Capp’s son.

There was an ‘Andy Capp’ television show on BBC in 1988. In 2001, Capp was a guest star on the ‘Family Guy’ animated show.

Smythe received the Best British Comic Strip award every year from 1961 to 1965. In the 1970s, he was honored at multiple festivals in Italy and he received the USA National Cartoonists Society award for best strip in 1974.

Andy Capp’s name is a pun on the gambling verb ‘handicap’ and the character has been criticized as a slur on Northerners and as a misogynist. But in 2007, a bronze statue of him by sculptor Jane Robbins was installed by local subscription in Smythe’s hometown of Hartlepool.
