www.afnews.info segnala: George Herriman (22 August 1880 – 25 April 1944, USA) was a highly influential comics creator who worked primarily in syndicated strips.
He worked as a newspaper illustrator and engraver from 1897. He began creating strips from 1902. One of his creations was ‘The Dingbat Family’ (1910–1916) and in 1910 he introduced the character Krazy Kat there.
The Kat got its own daily strip in 1913 and a Sunday strip from 1916 and ran until 1944. The feature was distinct and distinctive, with sparse, shifting backgrounds and dialect-laden dialogue.
The strange triangle of the brick-throwing Ignatz Mouse, the androgynous Krazy Kat, and Offisa Pup attracted the attention of serious artists and critics. The feature has been collected multiple times.
While his work did not achieve contemporary popularity, William Randolph Hearst supported Herriman to the extent of a lifelong contract with King Features Syndicate.
Among his other work, his illustrations for “Archy and Mehitabel” by Don Marquis are also notable
Artists from Will Eisner to Charles Schulz and Art Spiegleman attest to the influence of his work and its idiosyncratic aesthetic.
In the 1970s, researchers discovered that Herriman was born to mixed-race parents and was listed as “colored” on his birth certificate. During his lifetime, he identified as white and he was listed as “caucasian” on his death certificate. Historians today describe him as Black or Creole.
The Small Press Expo established the annual Ignatz Award in 1997, given for talent in the independent comics field. Herriman was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Society of Illustrators in 2013.
