Carl Barks Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #405 with Donald Duck and Nephews Last Barks New Cover Preliminary Layout Drawing plus Published Comic Book (Gold Key/Western Publishing, 1974). Carl Barks (1901 – 2000), the “Good Duck Artist” who was not allowed to sign his name to the countless Disney Ducks stories he wrote and drew over the years, retired in 1966, with his huge backlog of art taking a couple more years to see print. However, for a few years he would come out of retirement for an occasional comic assignment. Here’s the original graphite layout drawing by Carl (with help from his artist wife Garé) for the last new cover design Carl Barks created for Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories! The final published version of Donald as a bronco buster with Huey, Dewey, and Louie wincing from the sidelines was tightened and inked by Larry Mayer, and the comic was published as the June, 1974 issue by Gold Key, an arm of the Western Publishing Company. There would be additional Barks covers to come, but all were reprinted from earlier issues. This important, historical cover layout drawing is in graphite on onionskin paper, with areas left open for the book’s “trade dress” (the comic title and publisher logos). The art is signed in the lower right; it’s matted with an opening of 10″ x 15″ and framed with glass for an overall size of 14.5″ x 19.5″. The frame has a few minor dings. All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. The art is in Good condition with crease folds, handling wear, and age-related paper toning.
